20 Questions About Your Boss

Managing Upwards or Managing Your Manager; whichever way we look at it, it makes sense to have a greater understanding of the person who has a direct influence on your success.

Focusing on developing a shared understanding of both the task (shared values, goals, and performance) and the relationship (who we are and how we prefer to work together) will help towards strengthening the working relationship.

In a 1980 Harvard Business Review article John Gabarro and John Kotter wrote:

"No doubt some subordinates will resent that on top of all their other duties, they also need to take the time and energy to manage their relationships with their bosses. Such managers fail to realize the importance of this activity and how it can simplify their jobs by eliminating potentially severe problems."
